Pour Your Heart Into It

Honestly, I never knew much about the story behind Starbucks, or the person who built the global business empire. It was through this book, written by none other than Howard Schultz, founder and CEO of the modern Starbucks, that I got to understand so much more about what Starbucks stood for and how it defied the odds in its early days to become so hugely successful. Reading the book was like listening to Howard narrating his childhood days, how he broke through the mould of his humble beginnings, how he chanced upon the passion of his lifetime, how he struggled to make Starbucks a viable start-up and how he eventually made it into a national and global brand. It was unlike any other books that describe business theories or prescribe ready-made formulas for success. It was more of a window into the mind and the heart of the person who built the company, and witnessing the growth story of both the company and the mastermind behind it. Really, really inspiring.

Some memorable quotes from the book:

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.
What is essential is invisible to the eye.

--Antoine de Saint-Exupery,
The Little Prince

Some men see things as they are and say "Why?"
I dream things that never were, and say "Why not?"

--George Bernard Shaw

If you say you never had a chance, perhaps you never took a chance.

Vision is what they call it when others can't see what you see.

Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

--Helen Keller
