Personal Progress through Positive Thinking

This book by Hilary Jones and Frank Gilbert introduces the powerful concept of positive thinking. Simply by choosing to think in a positive manner, we can bring about tremendous improvements in our lives. The quote by Buddha right at the start of the book says it all, “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.”

Some memorable lessons from the book:

What your mind can conceive and believe, your mind can achieve.

- Napoleon Hill

Pause. Choose. Act.
By pausing before reacting, you can gain far more control over your thoughts and consequently your response to the situation. Resist the urge to react immediately.
Everything you do, you choose to do, albeit often subconsciously. You can choose to respond positively or negatively to any situation. Whenever faced with a choice, you may find it helps to think about how you would want others to treat you in such a situation.
Once you have chosen the positive response, act on it. Do whatever is necessary to turn that thought into words or deeds. Have faith in your choice.

Be true to yourself

Actively pursue what you really want out of life. Count your blessings. Make changes. Make sacrifices to get what you want. Take risks.

For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

- Mark 8:36

Man is born to live, not to prepare for life.

- Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago

Setting goals

1. Get rid of ‘energy-sappers’
2. Set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timescale)
3. Do a reality check
4. Who can help?
